 CHAPTER TWO

2.1 CONCEPTUAL AND OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS

       For the purpose of this research, the following are some of the frequently occurring words defined in which the researcher intends the reader to understand their usage in the research work. The words are education, women empowerment, literacy, gender, and motivation, moral

(1) Education: This is a process of training and instruction, especially of children and young people in schools which designed to sure knowledge and develop skills.

(2) Women empowerment: This means given women power, authority to act.

(3) Literacy: This means ability to read and write.

(4) Gender: This means the condition of being male or female.

(5) Motivation: This is a way of giving people what they merit, in order to put more on the work.

(6) Moral: The state of discipline and spirit in a person.

2.2 RESEARCH DESIGN

       The research design used was descriptive survey. According to Okechukwu .S. Abonyi et al (2006:38) sees descriptive survey as those studies in which data one collected from a small sample of a large population to enable the researcher describe in a systematic manner and interpret the characteristic/ features and facts about given population. The descriptive survey used aimed out finding out the influence of parents attitude towards on female education in Ngbo west development centre in Ebonyi State with the view of proffering solution to the problems.

2.3 AREA OF THE STUDY

       The area of the study was Ngbo West development centre. Ngbo west is a development centre in Ebonyi State. It is located at North senatorial zone in Ebonyi State and it consists mainly of Ibos. Ngbo west development centre is made up of four communities which include: Umuogudu Akpu, Umuogudu Oshia, Ukwagba and Ekwashi Community.

2.4 POPULATION OF THE STUDY

       The population of the study consists of some selected parents in the four communities in Ngbo west development centre in Ebonyi State which includes: Umuogudu Akpu, Umuogudu Oshia, Ekwashi and Ukwagba Community with the total population of seven thousand three hundred and ten (7,310) (National Population Census 2006). The study covered men and women.

2.5 SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

       From the four communities in Ngbo west development centre, samples of four (4) communities were composed. The techniques adopted in comprising the communities were random sampling technique. In the four (4) communities one hundred (100) parents were randomly selected from the total population of 7310, and the 100 parents is the sample size. Twenty five (25) parents were picked from each community.

INSTRUMENT OF DATA COLLECTION

       The main instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of structured question items designed to elicit information on the research question formulated for the study. The questionnaire contained two major parts (part A and B), Part ‘A’ consists of the personal data from the respondent. Part ‘B’ comprises twenty items which was further divided into four sections. The questionnaire was developed on a four point rating scale as following. Strongly Agree SA; =4 Points Agree A = 3Points, Disagreed D= 2Points, Strongly Disagreed SD = 1Point.

2.6 VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENT

       The questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor who is a specialist in educational foundation and two lecturers in the science education who are specialists in measurement and evaluation. In light of their comments, the instrument was modified to suit the purpose of the study.

2.7 RELIABILITY OF THE INSTRUMENT

       The instrument was administered to four (4) communities in Ngbo west development centre two times with the interval of two weeks. Results of the two tests were correlated using person’s product moment correlation coefficient. The co-relation of co-efficient was found to be 0.70 this was considered high enough for the instrument to be reliable.

2.8 METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

       The researcher went to different community concerned after administration of the questionnaire and the researcher persuade some respondents who felt reluctant in completing the questionnaire; and there were maximum returns.

2.9 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS

       The method of data analysis used in this research work is table and arithmetic mean. The raw score of the responses were rallied after which they were converted in arithmetic mean to determine the aggregate of the acceptance or rejection of each proposal. The formula used in arithmetic mean is

           n=Numbers of items

          X   = the mean.
