Project Topic: Factors Hindering the Implementation of Nursing Process (NP) in Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA II)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the factors hindering the implementation of nursing process in Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, (FETHA II) Ebonyi State. The objectives of the study include: To identify the nurses’ factors that hinder the implementation of Nursing process, to ascertain the administrative factors that militate against Nursing process implementation and finally to map out strategies for Nursing process implementation and sustenance. Four research questions guided the study. Related literatures were reviewed and summarized. A descriptive research was used for the study to elicit baseline information in the respondents’ natural settings. Simple random sampling method was used to get a sample size of 108 for the study which is 40% of the population. Structured questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by the supervisor and jurors of health promotion experts in Nigerian universities. Reliability of the instrument was established by exposing the structured questionnaire to a pilot study group of 16 nurses of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage. The results revealed that lack of materials and equipment (52%) to work with hinder the use of nursing process while lack of motivation of nurses through incentives and promotion and others were 40%. These gave a mean response of 3.3 and 2.5 respectively. One can state categorically that administrative factors hinder nursing process implementation. In line with the findings, recommendations were made, pertinent among which include:

Continuing education, frequent seminars and workshops should be encouraged in the hospital for promotion of nurses’ in dept knowledge on nursing process.

There should be adequate provision of materials by the management for effective implementation.
