Causes of Low Enrolment of Children into Secondary School in Ebonyi L.G.A

ABSTRACT

Looking around these days, one can easily notice that people especially children of school age, are eagerly enrolling into secondary schools. But the case is inverse in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebony! State. The researcher therefore, undertook this study to find out the causes of low enrolment of children into secondary schools in that area. He deemed it necessary to use printed materials, questionnaires, electronic media and personal interview to ascertain the causes of this gradual decline in the number of school children using specifically five publicly owned secondary schools in Ebonyi L.G.A. However, the findings was grouped into chapters which have sub-chapters. Chapter one is introduction which gave us the insight to what we shall be looking out for. Chapter two is the review of related literature where issues that are related to the topic of study are gathered and related to the topic under research. Chapter three handed the methods used during the research process. This covered the area of study, population of the study, sample and sampling technique, instrument for data collection, validation of the instrument, reliability of the instrument, method of data collection and method of data analysis. Chapter four is where the data collected were presented and analyzed to bring forth the actual cause of the low enrolment of children into secondary schools and chapter five deals with the discussion of the findings, Implication, recommendations, limitations, of the study suggestion for further studies, summary and conclusion.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1.   Background to the Study

Education is often regarded as the tool for a nation’s development, hence, the aphorism-that a nation cannot develop beyond the standard of its education. In Nigeria for instance, the aim of education is, among other things, to, train individual citizens to develop sound and effective minds and also to ensure integration for national development.

However, these beautiful ideas are seriously hindered from being actualized because of many factors. One of these factors is low enrolment of children of school age into schools. Low enrolment of children into schools is a situation where only few number out of the total number of school age children get enrolled into schools in a particular geographical location and in a given period. Causes of low enrolment of children into schools range from poverty, lack of education awareness, cultural practices and parental factors.

The effects of these are numerous, for instance, it hampers the development and progress of individual citizens and even the society in general.

It also increases the rate of crime in the society, especially crimes associated with juvenile delinquencies.

However, available statistics indicates that there is a high rate of low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebony! State, The factors responsible for this are not different from those that cause the same problem in other areas; that is, poverty, lack of educational awareness, cultural practices and parental factors. Experience shows that a problem with many contributing factors tike this can better be solved by dealing, first, with the most threatening factor. lt is on this background that we deemed it necessary to find out which is the most threatening factor in the problem of low enrolment of children Into secondary schools in Ebonyi Local; Government Area and perhaps, suggest the possible ways of solving it

Therefore, our task here is to find out the major cause of low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi Local Government Area and to suggest ways by which the problem will be alleviated.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

From the statistics gathered from five public secondary schools under Ebonyi Local Government Area, it has been established that there is a problem of poor enrolment of children into secondary schools In that area.

From the above figures, we can see the poor rate of enrolment of children into secondary schools from 2005-2008 in Ebonyi LGA

This therefore, makes it imperative to look for the cause(s) of this ugly phenomenon.

1.3. Purpose of the study

The major purpose of this study is to find out if poverty is the major cause of low enrolment of children into secondary school in Ebonyi LG.A, and from here, other purposes of this research work are summarized as:

  1. To find out whether ignorance contributes to the low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi LGA
  2. To expose bow cultural practices could contribute to low enrolment of children into secondary schools In Ebony! L.G.A.
  3. To find out how parents’ attitudes towards education can contribute to tow enrolment of children into Secondary schools in Ebony! LGA

1.4. Scope of the study

This study attempts to find out the major factor that contributes to low enrolment of children into secondary schools. As a result, for convenience sake and most importantly, for proper justification of the study, we are restricted to Ebonyi 1.G.A only.

1.5. Significance of the Study

This research will serve to make the reader and the people from Ebonyi L.G.A in particular, to know the causes of low enrolment of children into secondary schools in their area. It will also hopefully increase the awareness of parents for this area in the pursuance of formal education.

As a matter of fact, this research work will be helpful to students and other researchers who may wish to carry out further studies in this topic or other related topics in this area. It will serve as an insight into educational issues in this area.

1.6. Research questions

The following research questions are framed and distributed to respondents;

  1. Is poverty one of the causes of low enrolment of children into secondary school in Ebonyi LG.A ‘
  2. Does ignorance contribute to low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi L.G.A
  3. Does cultural practices, in any way, contribute to low enrolment of children into secondary school in Ebonyi L.G.A
  4. Can negative parents’ attitude towards education contribute to low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi L.G.A.
  5. What is the major factor that causes low enrolment of children into secondary schools in Ebonyi L.G.A.
