INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING:

By name Guidance and Counseling; A process of helping individuals discover and develop their education, vocational and psychological potentialities and thereby achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness .

Underlying assumptions of its theory and practice include, first, each individual has the right to shape his own destiny and secondly, the relatively nature and experience members of the community are responsible for ensuring that each person’s choice shall serve both his own interests and those of society thus making the concept of counseling essentially democratic.

Gidance is a pervasive activity in which many persons and organizations take part in.

A guidance counselor may give information to enables others increase the range of their exploratory behaviour and this can be determined by psychological tests or about educational opportunities.

Professional counselors and counseling psychologists are commonly found in Institutional settings. They are called to help individuals deal with grief of unexpected tragedies most times.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recognized the importance of guidance and counseling. Hence, the new National Policy on Education NPE (1981) recommends among other educational services, the services of career officers and counselors.

The apparent ignorance of many young people about career prospect in mind, and in view of personality maladjustment among school children, counselors and career officers will be appointed in post primary institutions.

Akubueze (1998) has identified the major aim of guidance and counseling and helping the individual to assess, understand and promote his development. In any educational system, guidance and counseling services should complement teaching functions to achieve this goal.  It is worthy to note that after three decades of formalized guidance programme in Nigeria regular educational system, the services offered by counselors are yet to solve the behaviour problems of secondary school students.

Behaviour problems are those activities of the students that do not confirm to the expected rules and regulations of the school. Uba (2002) reported that guidance has not recorded significant measure as in post primary schools. In a way to realize the counselor’s goals and objectives, in these sectors, the practices must reflect all aspects of counseling services as practiced in the regular school system, namely, information services, appraised services, counseling service, placement service referral and follow-up services.

The perception of the professional guidance counselors on the efficacy of the major counseling service is not yet certain. It is the wish of the researcher to ascertain the efficacy of the counseling services offered by the school in decreasing behaviour problems of students.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

       It is the focus of any guidance programme to harness the potential of an individual to attain self realization and self fulfillment for personal gains and the overall benefit of the society.

The attainment of counseling goals and objectives is dependent on the quality of guidance service rendered by guidance counselors and other stakeholders in the field of counseling profession in Abakaliki Local government area of Ebonyi State.

In view of this revelation on the performance of guidance counselors, there is need   to assess the perception of guidance services in secondary schools, guidance and counselors do not play their supposed roles in assisting the students in resolving their education problems, the efficacy of the roles of guidance and counseling in building good behaviour among students in Abakaliki local government area of Ebonyi State is below expectation and guidance and counseling were assumed to have wrong perception in tacking the behavioural problems of students in Abakaliki Local Government Area of  Ebonyi State.

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The general purpose of the study is to investigate the perception of school guidance and counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing problems of behaviour in secondary schools in Ebonyi State. Specifically the study set out to:

  1. Determine how teachers and counselors perceive the effectiveness of guidance services offered in secondary schools in Ebonyi State.
  2. To determine whether gender influence the perception of school guidance and counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing problem behaviour in secondary schools in Ebonyi State.
  3. To determine the perception of urban and rural based counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing problem behaviour in secondary schools in Ebonyi State

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is significant in many respects to the students, guidance counselors, the school administration, and the public and future researchers.

The study will help the students to appreciate the effectiveness of guidance service in reducing or decreasing their involvement in behaviour problems and to increase the range of their exploratory behaviour

The student’s awareness about the various guidance services that exist in secondary schools and their effectiveness will greatly influence their attitude towards guidance and counseling services.

The study on completion will enable school guidance counselors to determine the effectiveness or otherwise of the services they render that are capable of decreasing students’ behaviour problems.

The findings of this study will help the school administration to identify those counseling services, which are effective and thereby encourage their guidance counseling to use them. The school, it is hoped will be a better place when student behavior problems are well managed.

The study when completed will generate data that will be used to address students’ behaviour problem. The society no doubt will witness peace anytime students’ behaviour problems are managed. This is because these students come from different homes.

The result of this research is a bench mark to researchers who may want to carry out a like research in future.

1.5  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is limited to examining the efficacy of guidance services in reducing behaviour problems of secondary school students in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The study will also determine the perception of male and female guidance counselors operating in urban and rural area of Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

1.6  RESEARCH QUESTIONS

       This research is guided by the following questions.

  1. What is the perception of school guidance and counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing behaviour problem in secondary schools?
  2. What are the roles of guidance and counselors in building good behaviour among students?
  3. To what extent does gender influence the perception of school guidance and counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing behaviour problem?
  4. What is the perception of urban and rural based guidance and counselors on the efficacy of guidance services in decreasing student’s behaviour problems?
