EFFECT OF CARYOTA URENS EXTRACT ON BLOOD GLUCOSE CONCENTRATION

Thesis, Project Topic: Effect of Caryota Urens Extract on Blood Glucose Concentration

 CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION 1.1

Background to the study

Caryota urens is a species of flowering plant in the palm family from the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia where they grow in fields and rainforest clearings. The epithet urens is Latin for “stinging” alluding to the chemicals in the fruit. They are commonly called solitary fishtail palm, toddy palm, wine palm, jaggery palm. Its leaf is used as fishing rod after trimming the branches of the leaf and drying. According to Monier-Williams, it is called moha-karin (delusion maker) in Sanskrit. It is one of the sugar palms (Alarcon-Aguilar et al., 2002). Traditionally, in Sri Lanka,  Caryota urens L. (Kithul) sap has been used as a sweetener for many centuries and it has been used for preparation of varieties of sweet drinks, foods and various medicinal preparations like arista (Baker et al., 2009). In Sri Lankan ethnomedicine it is claimed to possess health benefits such as anti-ageing and anti-diabetic but those have not scientifically tested (Chattopadhay and Bandyopadhay, 2005). In some recent studies it was found that C. urens posses anti-oxidant and anti-hyperglycemic properties (Alarcon-Aguilar et al., 2002). Antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic activities of natural products have shown correlation with serum lipid profile (Chattopadhay and Bandyopadhay, 2005). The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of an animal or human. On its own, the body strongly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis (American Diabetes Association, 2006)…….

1.2       AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This research is aimed at analyzing the effect of the extract of the dried unripe  mesocarp seeds of Caryota urens on blood glucose concentration of  alloxan induced diabetic rats (lipids and total cholesterol). The objectives include the following:

  1. To evaluate the medicinal effect of the seeds of Caryota urens.
  2. To popularized the cultivation and growth of Caryota urens based the on the findings of this research work.
