Intimate Partner Violence among Undergraduates Students of Ebonyi State University.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study.

Over the years the issue of intimate partner violence has been on the increasing rate in the world, especially developing nation of the world, with the women being the most vulnerable group. Although this inevitable social phenomenon cut across social class, age, gender, social status, social organizations, and religious organization. But more often than not this alarming situation with its ugly consequences tends to attract little or no attention in respect to its redress or panacea. Black et 2011.

A lot have been unveiled, as it concerns violence especially intimate partner violence in our society. The most widely encountered form of violence is violence against women (Buken and Sahinglu 2006). The report issued by the world health organization (WHO 2002) states that violence occurs mostly in the domestic environment against women. The family, which should be a unit that meets individual fundamental needs and provides physical and psychological protection and development, is seriously prone to violence.

Intimate partner violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors by one partner against another in an intimate relationship. This can happen among boys and girls who are friends, especially among these who co-habit. Intimate partner violence has many forms which include physical aggression or assault, hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, slapping, and throwing objects or threats, sexual abuse emotional abuse. Intimate partner violence is a pattern of coercive behavior that may include physical sexual, economical emotional and psychological abuse of any family member or romantic partner by another. The purpose of violence among intimate partner is to maintain and establish power and control and such violence in the family is escalating. Intimate partner violence some time began with behaviors like threats name calling violence in his or her presence (such as punching of first through a wall) damage to objects it may escalate to restraining pushing, slapping, biting and also include punching, slapping, kicking, biting and sexual abuse, tripping and among others and finally it may become life threatening with serious behavior such as breaking with serious behavior such as breaking of bones of the use of weapons.

The victims of intimate partner violence are faced with situation which can be linked to walking on a land mine where you don’t know where the next explosion is coming from but you have to keep up walking. Intimate partner violence tends to buit up of incidences, which invariably true to violence men have been known to tear hair out of their girlfriends and to even batter them to unconsciousness. In many case each new attack is worse than the last. Intimate partner cuts across line or race, nationality language culture, economic, sexual orientation, physical ability and religion and effects people from all works or life. It is serious wherever it occurs (Ailliterate 2002).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the menace associated with intimate partner violence, this social phenomenon tend to be on the increasing pace in the society, with its negative effects telling on every field of human endeavor, this is so because the victims of this social phenomenon are always left with lingering psychological trouma which often drastically affects their performance in academic in-fact in everything they does.

       Experience has shown that intimate partner violence, has contributed in no small measure to the poor performance of students in our nation, especially those in institutions of higher learning.

It has also been unveiled, that, this ugly social phenomenon has a large place in the high level moral decadence in our society today. And also its negative effects has been alarming in work places, as it affect work efficiency, this is so because most of the victims of this social phenomenon tend to loss focus and balance within the period of time which the trauma last. As a matter of fact the menace arising day to day from this ugly social phenomenon has prompted the researcher to choose this topic “intimate partner violence among undergraduates and stand his faculty, faculty of social science and humanities as a study.

 Research Questions

In order to achieve a far reaching research, the researcher has put forward the following questions.

  1. What are the nature and types of intimate partner violence among students of Ebonyi State University?
  2. What are the causes of intimate partner violence among students of Ebonyi State University?
  3. What are the implications of intimate partner violence on their relationship in Ebonyi State University?
  4. What are the procedures of resolving intimate partner violence in Ebonyi State University?

Objectives of the study

The broad objective of this study is to investigate the incidence of intimate partner violence among undergraduate students of Ebonyi State University.

From the broad objective above the specific objectives are:

  1. To ascertain the nature and types of intimate partner violence.
  2. To discover the causes associated with intimate partner violence among students
  3. To identify the implications of intimate partner violence on the student.
  4. To identify procedures intimate partner could be resolved.

Significance of the Study

We have practical and theoretical significance of this study.

Practically: (1)the study will be used in sensitizing parents undergraduate, mentors, students, lectures institutions, government and society at large (2)the finding and recommendation of this research work will not only serve as a reference to member of the social services oriented planner who may be interested in the field in making polices to curb the practice intimate partner violence but will (3)also serve as guide to other investigator who may which to conduct further research on the intimate partner violence and its implication.

Theoretically (1) the study will add to the body of knowledge and previous literature especially in Nigeria context. (2)And also would probably create awareness to both abuser and the abused to realized that they are not alone and should seek for way of escaping this brutal situation.

Area of study

The area of the study is Ebonyi State University. At the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996s the Abakiliki campus of the ESUT, was upgraded to Ebonyi State University College by edict no of Ebonyi State, 1998 still affiliated to ESUT with Prof. Fidelis Ogah, former ESUT Deputy Vice Chancellor as the first Rector. In 1997, the faculty of applied and natural sciences with eight departments was added to the fledging University and later in 1998 when the ESUT pre-science programme was relocated to Nsukka, the Ebsuc pre-degree school commenced lecturers in both science and arts in replacement of the former.

The schools now have four campuses; one at ishieke, made up of faculty, one at Presco is made up of two faculty and last at perm. Site is now made up of two faculty, the faculty of social sciences and humanities and faculty Management Sciences.

       This study focused on the students of social sciences and humanities.

Definitions of concepts.

The terms defined below are as it is used in this work. This is for better understanding of the study.

Abuse: It is defined as the systematic pattern’ of behaviours in relationship that are used to gain and or maintain power control over other person.

Dating: It means two people in an intimate relationship spending time with each other and sharing time to get to know each other.

Intimate partner: It is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people.

Intimate partner violence: It means physical, emotional psychological or sexual harm caused by a current or former partner or boy/girls friends.

Physical violence: Is the intentional use of physical force with the potential for causing death disability injury of harm.

Sexual violence: Is any sexual act, attempt to obtain a sexual act, or other act directed against a person sexuality using coercion by any person regardless of their relationship to the victim in any setting.
