THE NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON IMMUNIZATION (NPI): A TOOL TO REDUCING CHILDHOOD MORTALITY

Project Topic: The National Programme on Immunization (NPI): A Tool to Reducing Childhood Mortality

ABSTRACT

Immunization here is referred to act of preventing childhood diseases like diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, measles and chicken pox. For instance, if a child does not receive polio vaccine, it can lead to infantile paralysis. Child mortality has fallen significantly in many low income countries because of the advent of national programme on immunization which was recently changed to “the expended programme on immunization” (EPI) with the aim of reducing drastically the number of death among children from vaccine preventable disease. This level of coverage of Nigeria national programme on immunization would be assessed thus, exploring the immunizable diseases and the current immunization schedule. The role of a nurse in the immunization programme would be discussed, thus, ensuring that every child gets all immunization done before the first birthday.
