GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF OKPUITUMO – IZZI AND ITS ENVIRONS

Thesis, Project Topic: Geology and Structural Analysis of Okpuitumo – Izzi and its Environs

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       GENERAL STATEMENT

The present study describe in detail, the geology and structural analysis exercise applied to the fracture traces and bedding planes of the Okpuitumo-Izzi and its environs which include Agbaja, Agu Akpu, Nkwagu, Obuchi Amachi, Amagu, Enyigba and Nwafogu.

The study area Okpuitumo-Izzi is underlain mainly by the Abakaliki shale (Asu River group) of Albian age. It contains some intrusions of pyroclastic rocks and a part of the Lower Benue Trough that experienced immense tectonic activity which accounts for the different geologic structures such as joints, faults and folds which characterized the area. It also comprises of sedimentary structures such as laminations, bedding plane and mud cracks.

The study was carried out mainly to determine the structure of the area, and attempt their analysis and interpretation, so as to establish detailed structural information on the area under study.

  •    LOCATION AND EXTENT

The study area is Okpuitumo-Izzi and its environs, which is a part of Abakaliki metropolis in Ebonyi State, Nigeria (Fig. 1), which lies between the south eastern Nigeria sedimentary basin. The mapped area include Nkwagu, Agbaja, Agu Akpu, Enyigba, Nwafogu, Obuchi-Amachi and Amagu lying between latitude 6o12’ and 6o17’N and longitude 8o05’E and 8o10’E. The dominant geological material is Abakaliki shale of the Asu river group of the middle Albian times.

1.3       ACCESSIBILITY

The area under study is made accessible in five major road networks of Ezza-Ogoja Water Works road, Enugu-Abakaliki-Onwe, Enugu-Abakaliki Obubra road and Abakaliki routes. Gateways are provided to the study area while the numerous footpaths provided access to the outcrops (Fig. 2).

  •      AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This study is aimed at detailed description of the geology and structural features of Okpuitumo-Izzi and its environs.

The study was carried out mainly to determine the tectonic structures of the area, analyze and interpret them, and obtain detailed structural information on the study area.

  •      CLIMATE

The area under study falls within the humid tropical rainforest region of south-eastern Nigeria with annual rainfall of 1750 – 2500mm per annum. The rainy season lasts from March to October, with its peak in July through August and September, accompanied by dry season from November to February which most often is caused by seasoned water drought. The Harmattan wind keeps the humidity low from December to January. The mean annual temperature range of the dry season is about 28th and occurs in the month of February and March. During the rainy season there is high humidity, heavy flooding, soil leaching and sheet out wash (Fig 3).
